フィールド科学をかんがえる : 西北研究所を原点にして

Abstract

2012年夏, 中国の張家口と内モンゴルを訪れた. 前年の夏には大興安嶺を巡った. いずれも, 今西錦司(1902-92)・梅棹忠夫(1920-2010)先生たちの探検・フィールド調査の足跡をたどったものだが, 太平洋戦争中に未知のフィールドに挑んで成し遂げた行為を, あらためてかんがえてみた. 張家口には西北研究所(今西錦司所長)があった. 敗戦までの短期間とはいえ, 同研究所が辺境の地でおこなったフィールド・ワークは, 戦後の京都大学を中心とする学術探検やフィールド科学の展開(「高所プロジェクト」もその系譜に連なるといえよう)の原点といえるのではないだろうか.

I visited Zhangjiakou and Inner Mongolia of China in the summer of 2012, the Greater Khingan Range in 2011. I followed the footprint of the exploration and the field survey by Kinji Imanishi (1902-92). I thought about the act that challenged unknown Field. There was the Northwest Research Institute in Zhangjiakou from 1944 to 1945. Despite a short term until defeat of the Pacific War, the Research Institute performed field works in the remote ground. It is the origin of the exploration and the field science led by Kyoto University after the war.
