<研究ノート>短期留学とメンタルヘルス

Abstract

平成20年に留学生30万人計画が策定された。これは、本邦を世界に開かれた国とするために平成32年までに交換留学生の受け入れを30万人に拡大させる計画であり、その一環として、文部科学省は国際化拠点整備事業(G30)を開始した。京都大学は拠点のひとつに指定され、海外の大学との交流や、長期のみならず短期留学者の派遣および受け入れが活発に行われている。海外に渡航するということは、そもそも高いリスクを抱えるものであり、現地の少ないリソースの中で、異文化に適応しつつ直面化した問題に対応しなければならない。実際、異文化に適応できず、留学先で精神不調を来してしまう症例が散見される。これまで、カルチャーショックなど、渡航に伴う一般的なリスクやそれに伴う精神不調については、様々な文献の中で述べられてきたが、短期と長期の滞在では抱えるリスクは異なる。例えば、発症する精神疾患としては、長期ではうつ病や不安障害が多いのに対し、短期では急性一過性精神病性障害といった幻覚妄想状態を呈する症例が比較的多くみられる。現在増加しつつある短期の留学で抱えるリスクに特化した文献はこれまで見られなかった。本稿では、一般的な留学における精神面の危機について説明し、そのあと、短期留学に特化したリスクと対応法について説明する。

At the Diet in 2008, the government announced its hopes to boost and expand the number of foreign exchange students to 300, 000 by 2020. In 2009, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology launched the Global 30 Project and designated Kyoto University as one of the centers for the project. We facilitate not only the acceptance of overseas students to Japanese universities, but send many students and researchers to foreign universities for either long or short term exchanges. However, there is a high possibility of encountering accidents and health problems in foreign countries. In fact, in some cases sufficient adaptation is not made to a different culture and psychological problems occur as a result. General risks one comes across in foreign countries such as culture shock are often described in the literature, but the risks for long stays are different from those for short stays. With regard to psychiatric disorders, depressive disorder and anxiety disorder are sometimes seen in people on long term exchanges, but we propose the psychotic disorder that manifests as delusions or hallucinations is seen relatively more often in people on short term exchanges. We describe and make clear the risks of staying in foreign countries for short term exchanges and how to cope with these problems.
