定名詞句に関わる指示の不透明性の一考察

Abstract

命題的態度を表す動詞の補文中に定名詞句が現れるとき, それらを含む文全体が指示的に不透明な文脈を形成することがある. Cole (1978)では, 詳細に検証されるならば, この現象は実際には指示の不透明性ではないとの主張が為される. 本稿では, Cole(1978)の議論の問題点を指摘し, その批判的検討を契機として, この現象の背後には, 「定名詞句の属性的用法」と「参与者の知識状態」という二重の要因が並存していることを示す. そして, この二重の要因が, 相互にいかなる関係にあるときに指示の透明性が確保され, また, それらがいかなる関係にあるときに指示の不透明性が生じるかを, 参与者による推論の問題として分析する.

A sentence containing a definite noun phrase which is embedded beneath a verb of propositional attitude sometimes forms a referentially opaque context. In Cole (1978), it is argued that given a detailed verification, this case of "referential opacity" is not a referential opacity indeed. In this study I will point out the problems in Cole's (1978) discussion. Through the critical examination of these problems, I will show two factors of "an attributive interpretation of definite noun phrases" and "the state of knowledge" in a profound consideration of this case. Then I will analyze the relationship of these dual factors in terms of inferences by a participant ; in what relationships referential transparency is caused, and in what relationships referential opacity is caused.
