Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide an insight into the basic structure on which the psychoanalytic theory of affect is constructed, by focusing on Freud's concept actual neurosis (Aktualneurose). Actual neurosis pertains to a clinical entity that was proposed by Freud in the 1890s, and which has been ignored, or at least marginalized, in modern psychoanalysis. However, the conceptual model that Freud developed to explain the cause and mechanism of actual neurosis in fact proved to be the cornerstone of psychoanalytic understanding of affects. In short, it paved the way for the conceptualization of anxiety as a 'germ' of affect, which is opposed to any other affects.
