The zoom shots were in full flourish on the screen of American commercial movies from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Nevertheless, zoom shot, which is a relatively new and low-cost shooting technique used mainly for TVs, has been generally looked down upon as substitute for a dolly shot, which is a traditional and high-cost filming technique used mainly for movies. This paper shows that a zoom shot in Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller has an original effect which a dolly shot cannot achieve, by focusing on a certain convention shared between American commercial movies and the audiences through the traditional dolly shot (and zooming as substitute for a dolly shot.) This effect nullifies a concept of the "depth" whose realization traditional American mainstream movies had pursued, not only in the description of the external appearance in a flat space but also in that of the internal emotion of a protagonist. |
