キリマンジャロの登山と調査

Abstract

1995年9月、アフリカの最高峰キリマンジャロ(5895m)に登る機会があった。ルートは、タンザニア側の一番西のマチャメ・ルートから山の南面をトラバースして登頂し、一番東側の一般ルート、マラング・ルートから下るもので、5泊6日の行程であった。途中、氷河地形(主にモレイン)や周氷河地形(構造土)、氷河などを観察するために、ラヴァ・タワー小屋跡、アロー氷河小屋跡(4800m)を経由した。バランコ小屋の周辺には大きな最終氷期？のモレインが多数分布している。また、Breach Wall からバランコ谷の上部にかけて完新世？のモレインが目の前に広がっている。バランコ小屋からはいくつものモレインを観察しながらバラフ小屋へ行った。最高峰のウフル・ピークには9月13日午前5:10に到着した。下山途中のマラング・ルートのキボ小屋(4750m)から下では、多角形土、階状土、条線、ソリフラクション・ロウブなどさまざまな周氷河地形が見られた。地図の比較(1950年代、1970年代、1980年代)によると1950年代からの氷河の後退は顕著で、文献によると、1953年から1989年の36年間で面積が6.7km[2] から3.3km[2] と半分以下になっている。

I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro (Kibo), the highest mountain in Africa at a height of 5895m, in September 1995. The route was from Machame Village via the Southern Circuit to Barafu Hut before reaching the Uhuru Peak (5895m) at 5:10 AM on September 13. Then, I walked to Gilman’s Point and took the Marangu Route down to the National Park Gate. During this trekking, I observed many glacial and periglacial landforms such as moraines and patterned grounds, as well as some glaciers. Patterned grounds I recognized included sorted polygons, stripes, steps and solifuction lobes at higher than ca. 4300 m. Those glaciers on and in the crater have distinctive morphology, with vertical glacier edges. The comparisons of glaciers dipicted on old maps (the 1950s, 1970s, and 1980s) and with my photographs indicates rapid glacier retreats during the previous 40years. According to a literature, the glacier area on Kibo in 1953 was 6.7 km[2], whereas it was 3.3 km[2] in 1989, a decrease of more than 50% in 36years.
