<論文>仮面として機能する眼鏡 : O'Brien にみる体制崩壊の可能性

Abstract

In George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), several characters are described as wearing spectacles. First, in this thesis we seggest that these spectacles function as masks which conceal the character's backgrounds or their true selves. We focus especially on the protagonist Winston, and the two betrayals by Mr. Charrington and O'Brien respectably, who work for the 'Inner Party'. Further, we closely examine O'Brien's disposition which is concealed behind his spectacles. He is described as the perfect embodiment of 'doublethink' and implicit power. Finally, we argue for a possibility of the collapse of the prevailing party of the regime.
