Abstract

The source of drinking water of villagers in Soroba villages is the river water. Pigs are very important livestock for the villagers and they also drink the same river water. This survey was conducted to investigate water pollution caused by pig droppings into the river. We examined the river water quality by using semi-quantitative Pack Test (AZ-RW, AZ-2W) in Soroba village in 2017. We found that the river water contained lower nitrogen but slightly higher phosphorus compared with the upper Tama River in Japan. The concentration of ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, and nitrate, which indicates the pollution by pigs' droppings or sewage, was lower than those of the lower limits of measurement sensitivity. The slightly higher phosphorus concentration might be the result of soil runoff during the rainy season. These results did not suggest that pollution of river water by droppings and sewage contamination. Full-scale and continuous river water survey is needed to find the influence of modernization of this village in the future.
