<論説>九世紀前半ビザンツにおける皇帝権カ : テオフィロス政権を支えた人々

Abstract

八世紀末から九世期初頭にかけて、ビザソツ帝国の政情は大きく混乱していた。その背景には、相次ぐ政権交代などによる皇帝権力の弱体化とそれと対照をなす高官・高位保持者たちの政治的影響力拡大、さらには八世紀には安定していた地方と中央の関係の動揺があった。このような混乱状態に終止符を打ち、帝国に再び平穏をもたらした皇帝が本稿で集中的に分析を行ったテオフィロスである。本稿の検討課題は以下の二点である。第一にテオフィロスが即位するまでの約半世紀の情勢にも注意を払いつつ、テオフィロスがいかにして高官・高位保持者たちの強大な政治影響力を掣肘していったのかを検討する。また第二点目としては・中央に対して反抗を繰り返していた地方に対してテオフィロスはどのような関係を構築しようとしていたのか、という点である。本稿での分析によって、九世紀前半のビザンツ帝国の皇帝権力の動向に関して、新たな知見が得られることだろう。

Until the accession of the Emperor Theophilus, The Byzantine Empire was wracked with instability as center vied with periphery for authority, and high-ranking officials increased their powers under the reign of a series of short-lived emperors. Although rulng for a rather short period of time, Theophilus established a stable and enduring political system. Theophilus was able to exercise authority in the provinces by relying upon continuing contacts with provincial elites, dating back to his father, Michad II (820-9), who was of provincial origins. Theophilus was also able to counter the entrenched power of ranking officials by promoting provincial elites into the central bureaucracy. By establishing kinship ties with these newly-promoted elites, Theophilus not only dominated the central government, but achieved extensive provincial influence as well, which paved the way for political stability in Byzantium.
