In this paper we will reconstruct conditions of Roof-tile workshops during seventh century using many fiat tiles. For this purpose, we will need to judge the tiles fired at a kiln from the percentage of tiles. And we will can a smallest group of craftsmen classified by the type of tiles "A Unit of Craftsmen". We have analyzed five kilns. In three provincial kiln-zones from late seventh century, we found that they didn't have specific units of craftsmen in many kiln- zones and invited craftsmen when tiles were needed. We call this condition a "Continual Type of Workshop". And in kiln-zone during the early seventh century, many craftsmen stayed in a kiln-zone. We call this a "Continuous Type of Workshop". And we think kiln-zone around the Kinai (the five home provinces) functioned long term from the middle of seventh to eighth century. We found that this kiln-zone first adopted "Continual Type of Workshop", and then grew into what is called a "Continuous and Expansive Type of Workshop" (a condition that craftsmen stayed in a kiln-zone and extended their scale). As a resulted in, we discovered the three conditions of craftsmens' organizations. At first, many craftsmen work kiln-zones in in the Kinai and transported their products to distant consumers. Secondly, during the middle of seventh century, they started to make their "Continual Type of Workshop" kiln-zones near temples, mainly around the Kinai. In late seventh century (many temples were built especially in provinces), craftsmen made their "Continuous Type of Workshop" kiln-zones in provinces (which was called "Franchise Kiln-zone"), and when the new tile roof buildings were constructed around there, they went from franchise to making their "Continual Type of Workshop" kilns. |
