dc.description.abstract | The process of the Tokudaiji family's accumulation of shouen, estates, was characterized by the synchronization of their actions with the political situation. In the first half of the Toba insei, the period of rule by Retired Emperor Toba, the Tokudaiji family established shouen by exploiting their relationship with the royal family by marriage. They also contributed to the establishment of other shouen of the royal family. However, in the second half of the Toba insei, the Tokudaiji family was unable to establish shouen on their own due to the rise of the faction of Bifukumon-in. They, instead, established shouen with the support of their political allies Fujiwara no Tadazane and Fujiwara no Yorinaga. After the succession of Emperor Go-Shirakawa to the throne, the Tokudaiji developed a relationship with the emperor by marriage and were thus able to establish shouen on their own. Then, when the faction of Emperors Nijou and Rokujou had control of the government, the Tokudaiji built a relationship with them and established shouen relying on their authority. Because of the manner of this process of accumulation, the Tokudaiji's lands consisted mainly of shouen associated with small and medium-sized temples and shrines, and did not include many which were associated with the royal family or the Sekkan, regents. These are the characteristics of the Tokudaiji holdings, and they show the Tokudaiji family developed their own system for accumulating shouen. Their authority made this system possible. | en |
