抄録: Although selective mutism has not yet been regarded as a serious problem both in administrative and in educational institutions, an intervention in early treatment is necessary for the person and the family. This is because it might lead to serious problems such as social withdrawal and difficulty in employment when symptoms are prolonged. However, it should be noted that the symptoms are even themselves not well recognized in the field of education and welfare, and unified and systematic methods for treatments are not established even in support sites, since basic research has just begun. At the present stage it is essentially important that selective mutism is understood correctly by society and hope that the special support education as social measures would be established as soon as possible.
