<論説>キタイ氏族制の起源とトーテミズム (特集 : 共同体の諸問題)

Abstract

遼代、乃ち十世紀以後のキタイ人社會に在ても、猶おその成員を盡して之を兩分する二つの無意的社會集團があつた。耶律姓 (劉氏) と稱し審密姓 (蕭氏) と云われるものがそれであるが、當時のキタイ人には既にこれら集團の由來、名稱の意義などに就ての正確な智識は忘れ去られ、唯々古い慣習のまゝに彼等の婚姻がこれによつて規整され、共同娯樂・宗敎儀禮の執行が僅かに年間行事の一として殘る有樣であつた。遼代に降つてこそかくの如くさまで重大な關心を惹かなくなつたこれら集團ではあつたけれども、實はこれがキタイ人の古い共同體に、その根幹的な社會組織をなしたモイエティーその物の名殘に他ならなかつたのである。耶律フラトリー・審密フラトリーによつて形成された二分體制というこの事實からは、當然ながらフラトリー・トーテミズムの豫想が立てられるでもあらう。この點、本論文は先ずこの豫想を、トーテミズムに隨伴する本質的な諸現象から考證して、確かにそれがキタイ祖先傳說中の白馬青牛說話に元唆され、就中、耶律＝召Jalā(馬)・審密＝sirmut(牛)というフラトリー名稱の語義に顯示されるようなトーテム集團であつたことを實證する。そして引續き、この論證の結果を單なる民族誌上の一事實としてだけに止めないで更に、社會集團結成の原理たるべきトーテミズムの本質を追求しつつ、キタイ未開社會の組織、特にその氏族制を發生的に考察すると共に、併せてその後の發展を歷史的に跡ずけるのである。

Among the Kittans there were two communal arrangements which divided the people. Such were the Yeh-liis (耶律) and the Shên-mis (審密), but their origins and their meanings were already unknown to the people at large only remaining their slightest traces in the matrimonial customs and the religeous rituals and pastimes of the community. Though not so conspicuous in the reign of Liao (遼) such customs were the remains of the old communal arrangements which once made themselves felt as the essencial institutions of the tribe. The two social systems which divided the tribe into the Yeh-lii and the Shên-mi phratries are to be considered, in my view, as the results of phratry totemism. In this article an attempt was made to explain the essential phenomenon of totemism and I suggested in the folkloric tradition of the tribe the origines of the above-named phratries. In the process of my argument, however, I also discussed that the totemism was the formative power of the communal arrangement.
