<論説>地理学の本質

Abstract

地理学をもつて区域的科学及び統合的科学とみなすハーツホーンなどの説は、たしかに近代地理学の有力な思潮に棹すものではあるが、それは研究方法からの一面的考察を強調した結果であって、地理学の本質を全面的に把握した主張とはいえない。これに対して地理学の研究対境を人間生活の場所としての土地と限定すれば、その対境面からして地理学を土地科学及び場所科学とする提唱が可能になつてくる。かくして現代の地理学界においては、地理学の対境と方法とを通して考え合せれば、その本質を土地的区域科学及び場所的統合科学というのが妥当であろう。かような本質を十分に具えた地理学の中軸的部門はいま形成の過程にあるわけで、この新たな酒を盛るためには、地理学のもつ近代的体系にも一大変革が加えられねばならない。

Hartshorne's theory, which regards geography as a regional and synthetic science, is sure to be in the main current of the modern geography, but it cannot be in the main current of the modern geography, but it cannot be said to grasp the full nature of geography, with its one-sided emphasis of researching method. As compared with this, that we define the researching object of geography as land, a place of human life, enables us to offer geography as a land and place science from its objective emphasis. Then, in modern geography, thinking the method and object together in geography, we are due to say that its nature consists of a regional science in land and a synthetic science in place. The core of geography that has the above-mentioned nature is now in course of construction, with a great change in its modern system.
