<論説>ピーコックの立場 (上) : 十五世紀中葉における宗教論争について

Abstract

いわゆる「地下運動」時代におけるロラード運動の具体相をとらえ、その説く教説がいかに民衆にアピールしえたかを明らかにするとともに、これに対決したピーコックの反論の内容をその主著『僧侶を余りにも批難しすぎざること』の分析によって究明し、この一五世紀中葉における宗教論争を通じて、当時の社会不満の表明と、これに対応する支配階級の動向の一端にふれる。ピーコックは当時の支配階級たるランカスター政権の代弁者としてロラード派教説に対決するのではあるが、もはや伝統的なカトリックの立場からはこれを批判しえず、新らたに彼独自の「理性の判断・自然の法」を聖書に優越させることによってロラード派を説得するほかなく、ここに彼がかえって異端として審問されねばならぬ根拠があつた。この彼の悲劇こそは、当時の社会の相剋を反映せるものであり、彼はいわばそれに殉じた人であったといえよう。

This article explains the then expression of social discontent and a corresponding trend of the ruling class, through the religious controversy in the middle fifteenth century, by taking the concrete aspects of the Lollards movement in the so-called "underground movement" period, explaining how their teaching appealed to common people, and examining the Peacock's objection from analysis of his book "Not to over-condemn the priests." Peacock stood against the Lollards teaching as a spokesman of the Lancaster administration, the then ruling class, and he could no longer criticise it from the traditional catholic standpoint, having no choice but to persuade the Lollards sect by making his own thesis 'judgement of reason' and 'law of nature' sperior to the Bible, by which he had to be tried as a heretic. His tragedy reflected the difficulties of the then society, of which he was a victim.
