<論文>トマス・リードにおける知覚の直接性と知覚的知識 --『探求』と『試論』の対比を通して--

Abstract

観念説の知覚の説明が懐疑論に至りつくことを危惧し知覚の直接性を訴えることで私たちの知覚的知識を擁護しようとしたリードは, これまでさまざまな視点から研究されてきた. しかし, 彼が『探求』と『試論』で感覚と知覚の説明順序を逆転させていることについては, これまであまり触れられてこなかった. 本稿ではこのような議論の構造的な変化とその背景を明らかにしつつ, この変化がリードの知覚の直接性の議論に及ぼす二つの影響について考察する. 第一に, 哲学的な知覚的直接性の主張は普通の人々の知覚的直接性を前提にしており, この知覚的直接性はそれ自体では知覚的知識を擁護しないこと. 第二に, 認識的直接性の主張も論点先取に陥っているが, 『試論』は可謬主義的な知識観を受容し, この独断論的な立場を弱毒化していること. こうした議論は, 晩年のリードにとって知識論がより重要な論点となっていたことを示唆する.

Modern commentators have examined Thomas Reid's claim on direct perception, but few have considered the fact that Reid's explanation of sensation and perception radically changed between his two major works, Inquiry and Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man. Although Reid begins with an analysis of sensation and re-discovers our perceptual belief in Inquiry, in Essays he begins with our perceptual belief as a principle taken for granted and abstracts sensation through philosophical analysis. This structural change illuminates our assessment of Reid's claim on direct perception. On the one hand, it reflects that the philosophical claim on perceptual directness originates in the vulgar man's standpoint, and that perceptual directness itself cannot save our perceptual knowledge. Conversely, this change suggests that Reid's claim on epistemic directness also begs the question, but the version in Essays avoids this criticism by accepting fallibilism. These arguments suggest that the keystone for Reid, in his later years, lied in how to operate his fallibilistic theory of knowledge, rather than how to assert perceptual directness.
