Abstract

Haruki Murakami has been considered a “full-length novelist” for a long time. However, in order to comprehensively grasp his writing career, it is necessary to revisit his early work, which included short stories. This paper focuses on a set of four texts, each with a different content and format, titled “Four Thoughts on the Spaces with Books, ” published in 1982 in the magazine Brutus, No.43. This cluster of works, now largely neglected, is extremely significant, as it reveals traces of trial and error in the early days of Murakami's career as a writer, and provides an excellent foundation from which to explore his subsequent literary development.
