Abstract

This study focuses on Naoko, one of the heroines of Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood. This paper comprises four sections. Section one discusses Naoko's auditory hallucinations and indicates that there are scenes in which “I” does not appear to be talking about them. Section two discusses Naoko's schizophrenia and “I's” acceptance of her illness, including why “I” conceals Naoko's illness when “I” talks about Naoko. Section three discusses the factors responsible for the suicide of Kizuki, Naoko's lover and “I's” best friend, and how Naoko dealt with it. Section four discusses “I's” perception that Naoko and “I” were bound together at "the border between life and death, " and what Naoko, who opted to die, gave and shared with “I.”
