Abstract

本稿は、手話一般で広く銀察される身体分割(body partitioning)という現象を日本手話の例を題材にして分析するものである。身体分割とは、話し手の身体の各領域が別々の参与者の対応する身体部位を表す現象のことである。例えば、話し手の右手が太郎の右手を表し、話し手の左手が花子の左手を表すという現象がこれにあたる。本稿は、(i)身体分割のマーカーを記述し、(ii)身体分割のある種の用法が日本語の伏字と共通する動機 --相反する思いを同時に伝えたいという動機-- で生じているということを示す＊。

This article analyzes body partitioning, a phenomenon widely observed in signed language in general, as it is manifested in Japanese Sign Language. Body partitioning occurs when different parts of the speaker's body are used in a single utterance to represent the corresponding body parts that each belong to different participants (e.g., the speaker's right hand and left hand correspond to Taro's right hand and Hanako's left hand, respectively). After describing how body partitioning is indicated in this language, this article shows that one of the uses of body partitioning arises from the motivation it shares with Japanese fuseji (euphemism in written language which replaces or deletes graphemes), i.e., the motivation to convey conflicting thoughts at the same time.
