Abstract

アメリカの歴史を知性主義と反知性主義の対立から読み解いたリチャード・ホフスタッターの『アメリカの反知性主義』(Anti-Intellectualism in American Life, 1962)からは，アメリカがいかに排他的な「男らしさ」にそのアイデンティティの根拠を置いてきたかが浮かび上がってくる．彼とほぼ同時代に活躍した女性作家であるエドナ・ファーバー(1885-1968)は，小説『ジャイアンツ』(Giant, 1952)の中で，まさに反知性主義的なキャラクターを登場させ，それとは真逆のタイプのヒロインとの対比により，そういったキャラクターが体現する「男らしさ」がいかに虚構に満ちたものであるかを示した．本稿では，反知性主義的な「男らしい」アメリカ像に代わるものとして，ファーバーがどのようなアメリカのアイデンティティのあり方を提示したのかを明らかにする．

From Richard Hofstadterʼs Anti-Intellectualism in American Life (1962), which interprets the American history through the conflict between intellectualism and anti-intellectualism, it is understood that the United States could be defined as a “masculine” country. Edna Ferber, who lived and worked in the same period as Hofstadter, has long been an ignored figure among critics of American literature. However, recent years have seen the reevaluation of her works, albeit gradually. In this thesis, I analyze some of her characters in Giant (1952) as typical anti-intellectualists, who believe in the idea of America as a white, male country. I then uncover how Ferber tries to demystify this idea by using her heroine Leslie, who never settles into one identity. I argue that through writing this novel, Ferber attempts to construct an alternative American identity which can be interpreted as an antithesis of “masculine” America.
