<論文>杉孫七郎と泉涌寺 --宮中との関りを通して--

Abstract

本稿は，明治以降の宮中・寺社が近代国家の変容に対応した過程を，杉孫七郎と泉涌寺を通して，明治政府における寺社への対応，および宮中と府中(政府)の関係を中心に論じたものである。杉は明治以後，宮内省要職を歴任し，泉涌寺は近世天皇廟を有する等，皇室と関係が深かった。両者の関係を検討し，明治維新により形式的に国家の頂となった天皇を擁する宮中，そこと関係が深かった寺社の変容を捉え直すことは，維新の本質の一端を明らかにすることにつながるものである。従来，明治政府と皇室，寺社の関係は，明治初年の神仏分離や国家神道の関係で捉えられてきた。しかし，その中で明治以後，約半世紀に亘り宮内省から寺社・皇室と関与した杉は看過され，誰がどのように変化に対応したかという宮内省内の実態は明確にはされてこなかった。そこで本稿ではこれまで本格的には使用されてこなかった杉孫七郎日記と泉涌寺日記等の泉涌寺所蔵史料を用いて，杉と泉涌寺の関係を検討した。杉は寺社・皇室と密接につながりながらも宗教的傾倒はほぼ見られず，むしろ，政府首脳の長州藩人脈に，歴史・文化を介在にして，宮内省内での公武相互における立場を高めていった。同時に，幕末以来，欧米列強の脅威を前に，国家の存亡を左右するとみなして近代国家における皇室の在り方を模索した。その杉は，明治以後，泉涌寺の再建や下賜金等，財政的救済に大いに関与した。そして英照皇太后葬儀とあいまって，泉涌寺を墓地にと考えるほど同寺を特別な存在にしたのである。明治維新は，近世まで公家が占有していた宮中に，武家が介入して公武で改革を進めた急変であった。その中で，歴史的・文化的側面も包括する形で新旧の融合を試みた杉の動向は，急激な変遷の裏で絶妙な緩急を図る存在があったことが，近代国家の確立を推進し得た一因であったことを示唆しているともいえる。

This paper discusses the process by which the imperial court and temples and shrines responded to the transformation to a modern state in the Meiji period, focusing on the relationship between the imperial court and the national politics in the Meiji government through Magoshichiro Sugi and Sennyuji Temple. Prior studies on this topic have been viewed in terms of the separation of Shinto and Buddhism and the state Shinto religion. However, Sugi who held important positions in the Ministry of the Imperial Household has been overlooked, and the actual situation within the Ministry of the Imperial Household has not been clarified. This paper shed light on the relationship between the transformation of Sugi and the Imperial Household Ministry. In addition to his personal connections with government leaders, Sugi used history and culture as a medium to enhance his position. Sugi, facing the threat of Western powers, sought a way for the imperial family in the modern state, considering it to be a matter of national survival. After the Meiji era, Sugi was greatly involved in the financial relief of Sennyuji Temple, including its reconstruction and imperial gifts. In conjunction with the funeral of Empress Dowager Eisho, he made Sennyuji so special that the temple was considered his cemetery. Nevertheless, the presence of an exquisite moderating force behind the rapid transition, as in Sugi's attempt to integrate the court noble and military in a way that also encompassed historical and cultural aspects, suggests that one factor in the Meiji Restoration's success in establishing a modern state free from external crises was the presence of a moderating force behind the rapid transition.
