Abstract

In Japan's current school education, achieving “Curriculum Open to Society” requires essential collaboration between schools and society, with particular emphasis on the active participation of the community and families in educational activities. This study aims to contribute to the realization of “Curriculum Open to Society” by clarifying: 1) the role of the community and family in Japan's early childhood education curriculum policy and the methods of collaboration, and 2) the role of the community and family in Singapore's early childhood education curriculum policy and the methods of collaboration. To achieve this, the study involves analyzing curriculum policies as well as examining data obtained through field surveys. As a result, it was found that in Japan, kindergartens are the primary institutions responsible for educational activities in early childhood education, with the community and families positioned as supporters. While the community and families cooperate with kindergartens in educational activities, the kindergartens are recognized as leading these efforts. In contrast, in Singapore, the community and family are positioned as partners in early childhood education, and it was found that families, in particular, are expected to actively collaborate with kindergartens in planning and managing educational activities.
