抄録: The current state of education in Japan has various strains and problems that need to be resolved. Particularly, in the field of higher education such as universities and technical colleges, in order to quickly train specialized engineers and raise the level of academic fields, it is a general view that liberal arts education is almost neglected. Furthermore, in elementary and junior high schools, preparation for the entrance examination for senior high schools has become the main educational content, and the purpose of education is not placed on developing one's character. In this paper, it is stated that liberal arts education is necessary not only to cultivate the foundations for studying natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities at universities, but also to provide basic key competencies in primary and secondary education. Based on this concept, in order to promote revolutionary changes of the present situation, the authors gave an appropriate model practiced by the late Mr. Sadahisa Matsubara during the period of the post-war chaos. We hope that this paper will be useful to those who are in charge of educational administration, and that it will be an effective motivation to reform and reconstruct the education system in Japan.
