| dc.description.abstract | We analyzed bronchial and chest-wall fistulas as risk factors in 70 cases of surgically treated chronic empyema, excluding cases in which empyema developed postoperatively. Comparison between the 43 patients with and 27 without such fistulas revealed a higher mean age (10 years), a higher ratio of females, and poorer pulmonary function in the fistula group. This group also exhibited a significantly higher percentage of bacteria in the empyema space (75% vs 28%), which resulted in a lower cure rate following one-step operation (61% vs 82%).
