抄録: | The Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech.) introduced an integrated system of instruction evaluation to be administered throughout the campus at the end of each semester, starting the second semester of the academic year 2001 The evaluation covered such items as preparation by and teaching techniques of the instructors as well as the degree of academic satisfaction and the achievement of learning objectives of the students. Tokyo Tech. not only published the results of the analysis but also informed individual instructors of their evaluations in an attempt to assist them in improving their instruction method. Those who received an unfavorable evaluation are more inclined to show strong desire to improve, suggesting that this evaluation system has positive effects Actually the indexes for satisfaction and achievement indicated a statistically significant improvement between the second semester of 2001 and that of 2002. The purpose of the evaluation is not only to judge if instruction is good or bad, but to provide guidelines for improvement. Tokyo Tech. has been monitoring the process of instruction improvement through systematic administration of instruction evaluations, data analysis, and feedback For this endeavor the Center for Research & Development of Educational Technology, which is responsible for the implementation of the program, received ISO9001 certification As demonstrated by this case, evaluation coupled with the systematic control of any improvement process could lead to constant qualitative improvements in university education. |
