抄録: Earthquake response of structures was interested to clarify the importance of restor-ing force characteristics in relation to the pattern of ground motions. The structureswere simplified and idealized into one-degree-of-freedom systems having restoring forcecharacteristics of Masing as well as slip model types. Discussions on Masing's andthe slip type mechanical models were made in this paper. Also, the idealized patternof earthquake motions in the horizontal components was outlined.Analysis was carried out by using an electronic digital computer, KDC-I, located atthe Kyoto University Computing Center, and it has been disclosed that difference in therestoring force characteristics of the vibratory system is very important, since the slipmodel structures have almost always shown a relatively larger plastic deformation thanthat of the idealized Masing's models if the intensity and the duration of the groundmotions are the same. That is to say, the slip model type structures seem to be affectedmore strikingly by ground motions with a larger displacement.
