Dynamic response analysis is frequently done to investigate the earthquake-resistant performanceand response of designed structures under severe earthquakes, using modeled hysteretic restoringforce characteristics. The paper summarizes hysteretic characteristics of structural materials and earthquake-resistantelements in building structures; beams, columns, connections, walls, sub-assemblages of frames ofreinforced concrete, steel, composite steel and reinforced concrete or reinforced brick masonrystructures, on the basis of the experimental and theoretical research works which were conducted bythe author and his research group. The paper also explains and proposes the methods to make a mathematical model of hystereticrules which is directly applicable to the dynamic response analysis.en
