抄録: | In this article Japanese sentence final expressions, "NODA" s, are discussed. Viewing NODAs as expressing the relations between propositions including NODA (proposition Q) and those which precede (or sometimes follow) them (proposition P), these relations are classified into four major types, and interrelations between these four types are considered. It will become clear that it is useful to suppose some problems (or themes) from the hearer's point of view which are brought about from the preceding proposition Ps. These problems are divided into either those about the causes or reasons of events described in proposition Ps or those about something concerning the illocutionary acts that utterance Ps are performing. The issue is that without any contextual or cultural knowledge it is impossible for speakers of Ps to determine what problems the (potential) hearers might set up about Ps. |
