抄録: | In analyzing Japanese conjunctions, there are two types of approaches : "compositional approach" and "noncompositional approach" (="grammaticalization approach"). The former regards conjunctions as functional units, while the latter regards them as functional complexes composed of anaphoric elements and conjunctive particles. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are both compositional and noncompositional conjunctions in Japanese. By observing the semantic scope of modal auxiliaries, I argue that sosite/sorede/dakara with a causal function are compositional, while sosite/sorede with a simple co-ordinate function are noncompositional. Furthermore, I suggest that the functional differences between conjunctions and conjunctive particles are correctly predicted by restriction (1) given below. (1) Sosite/sorede cannot have an anaphoric relation with the antecedent sentence when both sentences are in the scope of different modals. |
