抄録: In this study, it was conducted a questionnaire survey on daily regulation experiences to examine how the factors involved in suppression and exaggeration of facial expressions differed according to the category of emotion and the regulation strategy. A total of 162 Japanese college students were asked to describe their own regulation experiences of suppression and exaggeration of facial expressions at times of anger, sadness, or happiness. They assessed the frequency of such experiences, the intimacy, and the change in relationship with the recipient of emotion regulation. Many participants reported having suppressed or exaggerated their facial expression to people they were close to for all emotions. It was observed that their motivation was of two different kinds: prosocial and self-oriented. Most factors related differently to the category of emotion and regulation strategy. For example, the regulation frequency and the motivation differed between anger and sadness, although they are both negative emotions. These were revealed that often with prosocial motivation the expression of anger was suppressed, or the expression of happiness was exaggerated, and the exaggeration of happy expression improved the relationship. These results suggest that regulation of facial expression is useful for improvement and maintenance of relationships.
