This study examines duty-related traumatic stress among lifesavers in Japan. A questionnaire, administered to 15 lifesavers who participated 2007, consisted of demographic item, such as age, duty-related items, such as job experience, and items concerning the most traumatic event experienced during the last two years. As well as the Japanese version of the Impact of Event Scale Revised (IES-R; Asukai, 1999), The Japanese version of Burnout Scale Revised(Tao, 1992). The result indicated that 73 % of the respondents have had at least one traumatic stress experience while on duty during the previous two years period. 26.7 % among lifesavers with duty-related traumatic experience were recognized to have a high possibility to experience posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD) by IES-R. These results suggest that repeated exposure to disasters, which is in the nature of this work, accentuates posttraumatic stress reaction in Japanese lifesavers.en
