カテゴリ名は視知覚に影響するのか？－カテゴリ知覚と言語干渉課題を用いた検証－

Abstract

カテゴリ知覚は観察者の持つカテゴリが観察者の知覚に影響する現象であり，実験的には事物が同じカテゴリに属するときよりも異なるカテゴリに属するときにその事物の弁別能力が高いことで示される。これまで，言語ラベルを持つ言語的カテゴリでは話す言語でカテゴリ知覚の有無が異なること，そのカテゴリ知覚が言語干渉課題で減少することから，言語ラベルがカテゴリ知覚を生起させることが示唆されてきた。しかし，これまでの研究は言語ラベルとカテゴリとのどちらがカテゴリ知覚を生起させるかを十分に区別していなかった。今回の研究では，カテゴリではなく言語ラベルがカテゴリ知覚を生起させるかを検討した。2つの実験により，非単語を用いた言語干渉課題は言語的カテゴリのカテゴリ知覚を減少させ，単語の言語干渉課題は非言語的カテゴリのカテゴリ知覚は減少させないことがわかった。これらの知見は，言語ラベルは知覚処理に影響することを示唆する。Categorical perception (CP) refers to the phenomenon whereby category knowledge affects perception and is demonstrated experimentally by superior discrimination of objects belonging to different categories compared to the same category. Recent findings suggest that CP for linguistic categories differs between cross-linguistic speakers. Furthermore, verbal interference disrupts CP, suggesting that CP is caused by verbal labels attached to categories. However, previous studies did not determine whether verbal labels and/or categories cause CP. Here, two experiments revealed that non-word verbal interference reduced CP for linguistic categories and that word verbal interference did not reduce CP for non-linguistic categories. These findings suggest that verbal labels indeed affect perceptual processing.
