T.H.ハクスリーの科学教育論の検討－自然観に焦点を合わせて－

Abstract

T.H.ハクスリーの科学教育論は、科学的な方法にもとづく科学教育によって、子どもたちが科学的な認識を身につけられることを目指すものである。その一方で、ハクスリーは、晩年期に行った講演「進化と倫理」において、道徳的な価値の実現を意味する倫理過程という概念を打ち出し、自由放任主義批判を展開する。本稿では、科学的な認識と道徳性の関係を自然観に焦点を合わせて検討する。科学教育、道徳性の重要性をともに説くハクスリーの理論は、自らの科学者としての経験に裏打ちされていた。科学教育では、自然法則を見いだす懐疑を子どもたちが身につけることを求め、懐疑を社会学や宗教教育に応用することで、道徳法則に従うだけではなく、道徳法則自体を子どもたちが導き出すことを求めた。以上の検討から、ハクスリーの科学教育論において、懐疑を媒介にして、科学的な認識と道徳性の架橋を試みられていることが明らかになる。T. H. Huxley aimed to promote scientific recognition among children through the theory of science education. In his speech, “Evolution and Ethics, ” he criticized “laissez-faire economic competition” by presenting the idea of “the ethical process, ” which meant the achievement of morality. This paper explores the relationship between scientific recognition and morality in terms of the view of nature. The theory of Huxley who promoted the importance of science and moral education was based on his experience as a scientist. He required that children not only obey the rules of morality but also find out such rules. Therefore, he argued that it was important for children to obtain “skepticism, ” which would enable them to discover the rules of nature through science education. Moreover, he hoped that children could apply “scepticism” to other fields related to society and morality such as sociology and religious education. In summary, his theory of science education suggests the relevance of attempting to form a bridge between scientific recognition and morality through “skepticism.”
