W.v.フンボルトにおける言語教育－古典語教育に着目して－

Abstract

本稿の目的は、W.v.フンボルトの言語教育に関する思想、特に学校における古典語教育に関する思想を明らかにすることである。そのために、フンボルトの陶冶思想を彼の言語観をふまえて整理した上で、古典語教育と陶冶がどのように関連付けられているかを、言語一般に関する思想と照らし合わせながら考察する。フンボルトの言語観は個体性や精神力といった概念によって特徴づけられ、このような特徴によって、言語と陶冶は密接に結びつく。その上で、古典語教育は学校における一般陶冶の段階にとって重要なものとして捉えられる。なぜなら、古典語に内在している言語形式には、それを使用する民族の思考が現れており、それを学ぶことが、民族の精神を知ることにつながるからである。民族の思考と言語とを結びつけることで生じたフンボルトの言語教育思想は、単なるコミュニケーション手段を超えた言語教育のあり方を再考する上で、今なお意義あるものである。This paper examines the thoughts on language education of Wilhelm von Humboldt focusing on classical language education at school. We organize Humboldt’s thoughts of Bildung based on his view of language and consider how Humboldt associates the education of classical languages with Bildung from the perspective of his thoughts about general languages. Humboldt’s view of language is characterized by concepts of Individualität and Geisteskraft. Such characteristics clarify the relevance between language and Bildung. Humboldt felt that the classical language education is very important in die allgemeine Bildung at school as learning classical languages leads to knowledge about the thoughts of people using that language. In this sense, Humboldt’s thoughts on language education are still important to rethink the methods of language education beyond mere means of communication.
