「心理的両性具有」の概念および測定法に関する文献展望

Abstract

男性性と女性性とを共に備えることを示す「心理的両性具有」の研究は, 個人の性の多様性が可視化されてきた現代において, 個人の生き方の理解に重要な概念となりうる。ユング心理学においては(1)男性性と女性性が個人内で区別され, (2)社会的期待によって男性性もしくは女性性の抑圧が生じるが, (3)性別に拘らずに「自分らしい」特性を受け入れるという3つの段階を含んだ形で心理的両性具有を理解することが重視されてきた。一方実証研究では, 男性性・女性性に関する内的準拠枠の個人差が捨象され, 単に広汎に男性性・女性性を有することとして心理的両性具有を扱うことで, 仮説と異なる結果が示されたことで、研究自体が下火となった。男性性・女性性を対立的に捉えうるが, 男性性・女性性両方を持つことも可能である, というある種逆説を含みながら心理的両性具有を測定できる方法を確立させていくことが, 今後の心理的両性具有研究における課題であると考えられる。

The concept of psychological androgyny, i.e., being in possession of both masculine and feminine personality traits, is important to understand individuals' ways of living in the modern era where there is recognition of sexual diversity. Jungian psychology emphasizes the inner process of individuals, including: 1) differentiation of masculinity and femininity; 2) repression of masculine or feminine nature based on social expectations; and 3) acceptance of one's own traits regardless of gender. On the other hand, empirical research has treated psychological androgyny simply as a state of possessing high levels of both masculinity and femininity, and has ignored individual differences in the internal frameworks that define masculinity and femininity. Consequently, such research falls short when testing hypotheses based on such a restrictive definition of androgyny. Future research on psychological androgyny would require the establishment of a method for measurement of psychological androgyny reflecting its paradoxical nature; the differentiation and possession of both masculine and feminine psychological traits.
