dc.description.abstract本稿の目的は、マシュー・アーノルドの科学観の変遷に着目して、アーノルドの教養概念を検討することである。先行研究は、科学観の変化の有無に焦点化しているため、科学観の一貫していた部分や、文学との比較で見える科学の相対的な価値を見過ごしてきた。そこで、まず、通時的な視点と共時的な視点を交差させながら、アーノルドの科学観を整理し、次いで、教養概念の真意を考察した。本稿での検討を通じて、アーノルドの科学観の変遷が、「あるがままに見る」という一貫した主張を保ちながら、知的な価値と道徳的な価値に関して、科学と文学が果たす役割のすみ分けが進んでいく過程であることを明らかにした。そのうえで、アーノルドの教養概念の要点が「あるがままに自己の内面にある最善の自己を見いだし続けること」であることを明らかにし、アーノルドが教養概念を通じて、目的としての人間の回復を試みていたことを指摘した。ja
dc.description.abstractThis study was performed to examine Matthew Arnold's concept of culture, focusing on changes in his view of science. In previous research, his consistency about science and the value of science for him have been overlooked because of a focus on whether a change has occurred. Therefore, this essay first organizes his view of science from a diachronic and synchronic point of view, and then investigates his true motives in the concept of culture. The results show that changes in his view of science were related to the process of segregation of the role played by science and literature in terms of intellectual and moral values, while he consistently adhered to "seeing things as they really are." Furthermore, the essential point of his concept of culture was found to be "continuing to seek one's best internal self as it really is." Based on these discussions, this essay notes that Arnold aimed to realize a revitalization of human beings as a purpose through his concept of culture.en
