新聞『日本』に見る古島一雄の東洋観 --時事短評欄「雲間寸観」を中心に--

Abstract

古島一雄は明治期の新聞記者であり、大正期には衆議院議員となった。本稿は新聞『日本』にて事実上の編集長時代の古島一雄執筆の文章に注目する。対象は明治34（1901）年から37年にかけて掲載された時事評論欄「雲間寸観」である。主に中国（清国）、朝鮮半島、満州問題で対立を深めるロシアへの態度を中心に分析する。古島は清国・朝鮮半島については同じアジア人として内在的な批判と詠嘆を述べる一方で、対露同志会など当時の対外硬勢力とは一定の距離を保った。対露同志会の近衛篤麿、「アジアの目覚め」を執筆した岡倉天心と比較して、古島の東洋観は素朴な人道主義に基づく義侠的なアジア連帯主義と呼べるものである。

Kojima Kazuo was a newspaper reporter in the Meiji era and a member of the House of Representatives in the Taisho era. This article focuses on a newspaper article written by him when he was the de facto editor-in-chief of the newspaper Nippon, specifically the commentary column, “Unkan Sunkan, ” published from 1901 to 1904. Primarily, I analyze the attitude toward China (Qing), Korea, Manchuria, and Russia expressed in the column. While as an Asian Kojima criticized and lamented Qing and Korea, he maintained a distance from the hard-line foreign powers of the time, such as the Tairo Doshikai. Kojima's view of the East is a chivalrous Asianism based on simple humanitarianism in contrast to that of Atsumaro Konoe of the anti-Russian Doshikai; and Tenshin Okakura, writer of Awakening of Asia.
