A.ティンケルによる言語意識アプローチの理論と実践 --単一言語の言語意識アプローチの潮流に注目して--

Abstract

本稿は、英国で1970年代から1980年代にかけて見られていた言語意識アプローチの中でも、特に英語のみを教育内容に含めた、単一言語の言語意識アプローチの理論と実践を検討することを目的としている。第1章で、当時の英語教育の論調の変化として、文学重視や標準英語重視の問い直しが起こっていたことを確認し、その中で単一言語の言語意識アプローチが生まれてきたことを明らかにした。第2章以降で、特に代表的な論者といえるA.ティンケルの教科「言語の原理」を検討し、氏が、英語という単一の言語を体系的に学び、その後に発展的な問いを個々人で探究することを促すことを通して、個々人の「言語観」を形成することを目指していたことを示した。このような方法論は、多言語共生を目指していく上で万能策でないものの、自分の周りの言語環境を深く知ろうとする契機となりうることが示唆的であった。

This paper presents an examination of the theory and practice of the “single-language” language awareness approach, which was prevalent in the UK from the 1970s to the 1980s. The “single-language” language awareness approach is an approach in which educational content is presented in only one language (in this case, English). In Chapter 1, the paper confirms that the emphasis of English language teaching was changing at the time, especially the emphasis on literature and Standard Spoken English, from which the “English” language awareness approach emerged. From Chapter 2 onward, this paper examines the proposal of the particularly representative advocator of language awareness approach, which is Anthony Tinkel's subject “Principles of Language.” This paper shows that his aim was to form individual “views of language” through the structural study of one language, English, and to subsequently encourage individual exploration of language. While such a methodology is not a panacea for a multilingual symbiotic society, this approach can stimulate students to examine the linguistic environment in which they live.
