1920年代朝鮮の教育をめぐるナショナリズムと民主主義の関係 --申興雨The Rebirth of Korea（1920）とJ. E. Fisher, Democracy and Mission Education in Korea（1928）の比較を中心に--

Abstract

本論文では、申興雨のThe Rebirth of Korea とJ. E. フィッシャーのDemocracy and MissionEducation in Korea を比較し、両者の主張する民主主義と朝鮮ナショナリズム、そしてキリスト教の関係について考察した。申興雨は同書のなかで、三一独立運動以後の朝鮮における教育を通した民主主義の実現および朝鮮ナショナリズムの勝利を目指すことを主張した。他方、フィッシャーは総督府の教育政策を批判しながらも、同時にミッション教育の非民主的な面を批判、政治的な目的や宗教的な目的に左右されない「児童中心主義」「朝鮮人中心主義」の重要性を主張した。申とフィッシャーの主張は政治的独立をペンディングするものではあったが、申が家父長制的家族の変革を民主主義の課題の一部とみなしていた点や、フィッシャーが社会主義などについて自由な議論を求めた点に着目するならば、民主主義を担いうる主体性の獲得を目指した彼らの主張は政治的独立には還元できない問題の広がりを見据えていたと評価できる。

This paper presents a comparison of Cynn, Hugh Hueng-wo’s The Rebirth of Korea (1920) and J.E.Fisher’s Democracy and Education in Korea (1928), and examines the relations between democracy, Korean nationalism, and Christianity posited by both authors. After the March First Movement, in TheRebirth of Korea, Cynn argued for the realization of democracy through education, aiming for the triumphof Korean nationalism. On the other hand, while Fisher criticized the colonial government’s educationalpolicies, he also criticized the undemocratic aspects of mission education. He advocated for theimportance of “child-centeredness” and “Korean-centeredness, ” which should not be influenced bypolitical or religious purposes. Although their assertions reserved the right to gain Korean politicalindependence, if we focus on the point that Cynn highlighted the transformation of the authoritarianfamily system as a part of the democratic agenda and Fisher’s emphasis on seeking open discussions aboutideologies, such as socialism, their advocacy aimed at acquiring independence capable of sustainingdemocracy as anticipating the broader complexities beyond mere political independence.
