イギリスにおけるスクールズ・カウンシルの「言語学と英語教育プログラム」 --その理論的背景と教材の検討--

Abstract

本稿では、スクールズ・カウンシルの「言語学と英語教育プログラム」の到達点と課題を検討した。このプログラムでは①「精密コード」の特権化を問い直すこと、②各教科教育と言語教育をつなげること、③進歩主義で尊重されていた教師の自律性を担保すると同時に、教師たちの授業づくりへのヒントを提示すること、の3 つが目指された。実際にプログラムでは、子どもたちの「認識」と「能力」の相補的な育成と同時に、教師自身の自律的な授業づくりの推進を目指した教師用図書『使用される言語』が開発された。その中では、教科学習と連携しうるユニットや、様々な文脈での言語使用を分析するユニットなど、カリキュラム横断的なユニットが設けられており、言語環境の格差にアプローチするカリキュラム編成論としての意義を有していた。一方で、教師の言語への偏見が強い場合に、いかに「言語の探究」に導くかは十分に示されず課題として残されていた。

This paper examines the achievements and issues of the Schools Council’s “Programme in Linguisticsand English Teaching.” This project aimed to relativize the “elaborated code, ” which is the mainstreamin school education; to build a cooperative relationship between language teaching and teaching of eachsubject; and to ensure the autonomy of teachers, which was given importance in progressivism, while atthe same time to provide hints for teachers in lesson planning over the long-term. The project developeda teacher’s book, “Language in Use, ” which aimed to develop children’s “awareness” and “competence”on the one hand, and to promote teachers’ own autonomous lesson planning on the other hand. InLanguage in Use, the units were cross-curricular in many ways: one could be linked to subject learningand another showed the variation of language use in different contexts. This aspect of the project wasmeaningful as a theory of curriculum making, which approached the gap in pupil’s language experience.On the other hand, the project did not approach teachers who have strong linguistic prejudice, and theway to lead these teachers for “exploration of language” was not fully developed.
