ジャパニーズ・イングリッシュにおける「日本らしさ」 --浜口恵俊の「間人主義」を応用して--

Abstract

本研究は、ジャパニーズ・イングリッシュ(JE)を対象とし、日本文化の価値観や特徴がJEにどのように反映されているかを探究するものである。従来の研究が音韻や文法的特徴に焦点を当ててきたのに対し、本研究では浜口恵俊の「間人主義」を理論的枠組みとして用い、JEにおける「日本らしさ」の表現を分析する。「間人主義」は、他者との関係性の中で自己を認識するという日本独自の価値観を示す理論であり、JEにもこの関係性重視の文化的特徴が表れていると論じる。さらに、現象学的アプローチを採用し、日常生活やビジネスの場面でのJE使用を「生きられた経験」として記述し、その文化的背景を明らかにする。JEの語用論的特徴や受動態の使用、バックチャネリングなどが、日本文化に根差した独自性を持つことを示し、JEが単なるローカルな英語変種ではなく、文化的アイデンティティを保持し表現する手段であることを提唱する。

This study was performed to examine Japanese English (JE) as a linguistic variety reflecting Japanese cultural values and practices. While previous research has focused primarily on phonological and grammatical aspects of JE, this study adopted Esyun Hamaguchi's Contextualism as a theoretical framework to explore the manifestation of “Japaneseness” in JE. Contextualism emphasizes the relational nature of self-concept in Japanese culture, where individuals define themselves through interpersonal relationships. Using a phenomenological approach, the study investigated how JE embodies Japanese cultural characteristics in everyday and professional contexts as “lived experiences.” Key features of JE, such as pragmatic discourse, frequent back-channeling, and the use of the passive voice, are analyzed as expressions of cultural specificity. It is argued that JE is not merely a local English variety but a medium for preserving and expressing Japanese cultural identity in global communication. By foregrounding cultural dimensions of JE, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the intersection between language and cultural identity, challenging dominant Western paradigms in linguistic studies.
