dc.description.abstractThis article examines the current status of the gifted and talented education in the Gifted Education Center, particularly in the Science-Gifted Education Center (SGEC). SGECs have been established continually since 1998 by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF), which is a government agency. There are now 25 SGECs in South Korea. They have the mission of developing the human resources in the science and technology fields for the improvement of national competitive ability in the knowledge-based society in the 21st century. However SGECs are established as sub-organ of the universities and are financially supported and supervised by KOSEF. This article looks into the Seoul National University SGEC as a case study, and the following issues were revealed: First, a privilege is given to SGEC graduates when they take entrance exams to the Science High School. And this privilege attracts an "examination elite" to the SGEC. Second, few female students are in the class. To solve these problems, the SGEC must develop entrance exams to select not "examination elite" but the gifted and talented students. And they also must include and encourage gifted female students.en
