Abstract

When we think about the university-industry cooperation, we tend to think of the research achievements in engineering or advanced science. However, universities are now dealing with not only applied science but also basic science. The universities are constituted as a 'complex' of research and education. Today in Japan, the professional schools, such as business schools and law schools and so on, have been brought into the limelight. They are thought to contribute to university-industry cooperation through the results of education. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Japanese professional schools and to clarify their publicness. Furthermore, the paper considers the meaning of them in society. The conclusions of this research can be summarized as follows: 1. The role of the professional schools is very significant in society. 2. The publicness of professional schools can be understood by the publicness of education. 3. The professional schools sustain the overall publicness of universities.
