dc.description.abstractThe present study examines the judgments on the temperature change of mixed water in elementary school students. We asked 111 students (fifth-graders) to work on a temperature judgment task : What will be the temperature of water, when 1 l of water at 30℃ is mixed with 1 l of water at 40℃? In addition, we asked questions about the qualitative aspects of temperature change: How does the temperature change when we mix two lots of water of the same (or different) temperature(s)? Furthermore we measured the mathematical ability of the students to calculate the middle numerical value between two numerical values. The results show that the students could judge correctly in the temperature judgment task if they were able to correctly answer the questions and if they have sufficient mathematical ability.en
