抄録: | In India, the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulates the minimum qualifications for recruitment and promotion of faculty members. This study was performed to examine changes in requirements for faculty members in the UGC Regulations. The Workload in 1998 Regulation does not require that faculty participate in research. On the other hand, Recruitment and Promotion in 1991 and 1998 requires faculty to not only teach but also to engage in research. However, the Regulations do not necessarily require most faculty members to engage in research. The UGC regulations in 1991 and 1998 require faculty to engage in teaching rather than research. In contrast, the Workload in 2010 Regulation requires all faculty members to engage in research. The Recruitment and Promotion in 2010 Regulation more explicitly requires that faculty to engage in research by introducing the Academic Performance Index. The 2010 Regulation emphasizes research to a greater extent than the 1991 and 1998 Regulations. Taking the above points into consideration, the Regulations, especially since 2010, require faculty to not only teach but also to engage in research. |
