抄録: Within the diversification of higher education, the examination of articulation between upper secondary schools and universities according to the functional differentiation of higher education becomes an effective measure to choose appropriately talented persons for each university. Along with improving the "gap" between passive high school education and leading research university education, the development of a new articulation between upper secondary schools and universities programs in research universities, considered as the "international education and research hubs, " is important. This is also expected to increase international competitiveness, as well as the influence for Japan and abroad. The existing university entrance examination selection system, which focuses on scholastic abilities, cannot be considered the most appropriate measure to improve the "gap." The Advanced Placement (AP) program in the USA is considered an effective means of improving this gap. Not only does participation in the Advanced Placement (AP) program constitute a beneficial condition at college admission, but it also has potential to lead to academic success in the university. This paper examines the potential for developing a new articulation between upper secondary schools and university programs such as the Advanced Placement (AP) program, in research universities.
