抄録: | After The Ottoman Empire lost in World War I and collapsed between the years 1918-1920, a large part of Anatolia was occupied by The Western Allies. Under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Turkey started its War of Independence and as a result the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923. This was the end of the Ottoman Feudal System and the start of the Democratic System in Turkey. The Turkish Republic will celebrate its centennial in 2023. Even though the current government (Justice and Development Party) has not announced any official event plans, a number of ongoing projects have been announced to be finished by 2023, and will be a symbol of Turkish modernization on its centennial. This paper focuses on the upcoming centennial and introduces current ongoing projects planned for 2023. It also aims to clarify what this media event means for Turkey's modernization and the standpoint of the present government. By discussing the differences between The Meiji Centennial and The Turkish Republic Centennial in content and in the reaction of the mass media, this study examines the perception of modernization through centennial anniversaries in Turkey and Japan. |
