Abstract

This article aims to elaborate the psychoanalytic concept of sublimation. Sublimation is a vague concept, especially in relation to its meta-psychological development and value. This article considers both of these, i.e., "How the individual interjects the external value and uses it for the process of sublimation." From the works of Sigmund Freud, Juan-David Nasio, Anna Freud, Otto Fenichel, Heinz Hartmann, Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, and Francoise Dolto, three modes of the value of sublimation are presented: 1) formation of the internal instance, 2) castration, and 3) function of the ego autonomy. The other theories on the sublimation, which do not deal with the value, are then considered with these three modes, and presented in a table.
