抄録: ナフィールド科学教育プロジェクトで開発されたカリキュラムでは、将来の科学者のみならず将来の市民を育成することを目指していたことや、先端的知識を取り上げていたことが知られている。しかし、これらの指摘の根拠である『ナフィールド物理』等のO レベル試験に対応した科目は、グラマースクールの生徒を主な対象としたものであり、ナフィールド科学教育プロジェクトの一側面しか捉えていない。本稿では、幅広い学力層の生徒を対象としたナフィールド中等科学に着目し、これが開発・出版された当時の教育制度や科学教育界の動向と関連付けながら、ナフィールド中等科学の開発意図や教材内容を検討した。以上の検討を通して、①将来生徒が出会うであろう「基本的な問題」を視点として各学校の教師が教育内容を再考する契機を創出した、②すべての生徒に科学の原理や本質に触れさせることを可能にした、というナフィールド中等科学独自の特徴を明らかにした。
Several studies have documented that the curriculums developed by the Nuffield Foundation Science Teaching Project were courses not only for future scientists but for all students. Also, the curriculums included scientific ideas from modern science research. However, these studies investigated only GCE Olevel courses, such as Nuffield Physics, which were taken mainly by grammar school students. The aim of this study was to understand the other aspects of the Nuffield Foundation Science Teaching Project. This thesis seeks to investigate and explain the role of Nuffield Secondary Science when this course was developed and published. Nuffield Secondary Science was the course for students who were unlikely to take O-level science, and was less well known in Japan. This study identified the following characteristics of Nuffield Secondary Science: (1) it created an opportunity for teachers to reconsider the content of their teaching in terms of "fundamental issues" which are likely to be of considerable significance for students; and (2) it made it possible for all students to experience the principles and essence of science.
