dc.description.abstract | This study examines the influence of the maintenance of self-focused attention upon self-evaluation and considered the approach of the therapist in response to self-focused attention of the client during counseling. In Study 1, scales to measure the maintenance of self-focused attention on positive self-aspects and on negative self-aspects were constructed. In Study 2, the relationship between maintained self-focused attention on positive self-aspects and negative self-aspects was explored. Then the relationship between maintained self-focus and self-evaluation was investigated in each of four clusters categorized by the type of self-focus maintenance. Study 1 shows that it is important to distinguish between positive self-aspects and negative self-aspects when discussing maintenance of self-focus. Study 2 shows that self-focus maintenance on negative self-aspects do not always lower self-evaluation. On the contrary, it may at times actually raise self-evaluation, albeit indirectly. It was concluded that the therapist should not necessarily put a stop to self-focus immediately, but in some cases delay intervention until it has become possible to direct the self-focus attention in a positive way. | en |
